As someone who lives in a land-locked state, finding high-quality seafood can be a struggle. A few months ago I starting trying Sitka Salmon Shares and I was given an opportunity (and great deal) to share with Macheesmo Readers!

It’s really hard to know if you are getting quality seafood at stores these days. It is estimated that in some markets up to 60% of seafood isn’t even labeled correctly. (Source) Also, most of the seafood purchased in the US is imported and travels more than 5,400 to get to you. (Source).

What is Sitka Salmon Shares?

Sitka Shares offers you a personal share of seafood caught by fishermen owners in the Northern pacific and Alaska. They use low-impact methods to catch their fish and have a completely transparent supply chain so you know exactly where your seafood is coming from.

How Sitka Works?

When you buy a Sitka share, the fish is blast-frozen to ensure the highest possible quality and delivered to your door. Also, in the age of COVID, they are also offering no contact delivery, which I used recently. It was easy!

The Benefits of Sitka

I’ve received three different Sitka share boxes over the last few months and have been blown away by the quality of the fish. Thawing the fish slowly and cooking it well has resulted in some really delicious meals.

When you purchase a Sitka share, you are supporting small fishermen who make 20-30% more for their harvest through Sitka than if they sold it to a bulk processor.

Sitka partners with some of the strictest sustainability programs in the world, ensuring that no catch is over-fished. Long-term population health is very important.

Plus, did I mention that the fish is really, really delicious?

Garlic Butter Cod

Garlic Butter Cod made with Sitka Share.

I received a premium share of cod recently. Normally, I would use cod for fried fish, but I wanted to prepare this as simply as possible to really let the fish shine.

I ended up gently baking it with butter, garlic, lemon, and a few herbs. It was perfect with a side of potatoes. Even my fish-skeptical kiddos devoured it!

A simple preparation for white fish, like cod. Baked in a lemon-butter sauce, the fish is tender, flakey and perfect with a side salad or potato side!

Ingredients

4 4-5oz cod fillets
1/4 cup butter
1 lemon, juice only
2 cloves garlic, sliced
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Fresh parsley, garnish

Show Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375˚ F. In a small saucepan, combine butter, garlic, lemon, and salt and pepper. Heat over low heat until butter is melted and garlic is fragrant. Remove from heat.
  2. Lay out cod fillets in a baking dish and drizzle with butter sauce.
  3. Bake the cod for 15-18 minutes at 375˚ F. Fish is safe to eat at 145˚F and will be flaky when it is done cooking. Try not to overcook the fish as it can dry out, although the butter sauce helps if you overcook it slightly.
  4. Sprinkle finished cod with chopped fresh parsley and serve with sides of your choice.

  1. We’ve been Sitka Salmon CSA members for years. We live in the Midwest, so getting fresh tasting seafood is a challenge. The fish we receive has always been really fresh and enjoyable. Love it now that grilling season is here! They are a great company; wonderful customer service and supportive of local businesses too. They are owners of our co-op (Prarie Food Coop) and have been so generous with us. Thanks for this post!
