Welcome to The New Macheesmo!

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but my little home on the web here has been in a state of disrepair for the last few months. Pages were broken, recipes were hard to find, and it loaded at elephant speeds.

I sort of let all of these things go unaddressed because I’ve been working on a massive site-wide revamp.

Today is the day you get to see it and I really hope you like it as much as I do.

Let’s walk through the cool business!

Recipes like this awesome grilled cheese I made now have a new format which is hopefully easier to read and follow. As always, I’ll continue to do step-by-step photos for recipes and you can also clink the printed version of the recipe to see numbered directions!

New Website Grilled Cheese

Just a moment please...

1 delicious sandwich
Prep Time
Total Time

2 slices sourdough bread
2-3 tablespoons fig jam
1 cup grated Gruyere cheese
1/2 cup baby arugula
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
Print Recipe     Pin Recipe

Helpful Equipment

cast iron skillet

1) Heat a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Grate cheese and spread fig jam on one piece of bread.

2) Add butter to skillet so it can start to melt. Build the sandwich in the skillet, starting with the fig jam piece of bread. Top with grated cheese and pack on the arugula. Top with more cheese and the final piece of bread.

3) Flip the sandwich so both sides can get buttered from the melted butter in the pan. Cook the sandwich for 3-4 minutes per side until it’s golden brown and the cheese is melted. Slice and serve!

New Web Features!

Besides a slick new logo and design, there are some really useful pieces to the new site.

I’ve been blogging on this site for over five years and there are over 1,500 posts. Navigating all of that and finding what you want can be a tricky deal so hopefully these things help!

Finding Recipes

The new site has beautiful, photo-based pages for recipe categories that hopefully make it easier to find what you want. You can search for stuff, look for things by category, date, or ingredient. Some of these pages are similar to the old site, but now they all work so there’s that.

Poke around on this site. I dare you. It’s blazing fast for a food blog. I worked with a great team and we trimmed off plugins, code, and general website bloat from five years of mucking around.

The results are a site that loads faster than you can say sandwich.

For the data geeks out there, look at these speed test differences. I shouldn’t have to tell you but the site on the right is the old Macheesmo.

We trimmed five seconds off of the load time for the average page. That’s five seconds you can now use cooking instead of waiting for this site to load.

Turns out a lot of you read Macheesmo on your phones. 30-40% of the visits here come from mobile devices so I figured I should probably find a way to make that viewing experience not suck.

If you look at a post now on your phone, you’ll notice a totally sleek and easily readable responsive design.

I took the opportunity to rework the meal plans on Macheesmo slightly with this new site. The pages are laid out differently (with more changes to come).

Most importantly though, I heard a lot of feedback that the meal plans were too expensive and so I made them as affordable as I could. Essentially, they are less than $5/month now to join up and try them out. The difference is that to help with my administrative costs, I just ask that you sign up for the year instead of by month.

It’s the Little Things

If you poke around a bit, I think you’ll find there are tons of little things that you’ll hopefully agree make the site so much easier to love – from a more readable font to better image layouts.

A refresh like this makes me really excited to come here every day to share with you all and cook together! I hope it makes it easier for you to find a recipe and try it out because, after all, that’s the goal!

I just have to give a public shoutout to the team at Neversink designs that helped me with this ridiculous project. We have been slowly working (and then quickly working) on this for the last six months and they have been a freakin’ joy to work with.

In my opinion, they are what a design company should be: thoughtful, friendly, and extremely talented.

I would love to hear from you about the site. Hopefully, you like it as much as I do. Hopefully, you find it useful.

I’m sure there are bugs and if you see one, please do let me know!

Otherwise, leave a comment on the spiffy new comment form and let me know what you think!

  1. Looks great. I’m not sure what is called but when a iPhone gets to a site it automatically fits the Iphone screen. That would help me read it better because I don’t have a computer. Looking forward to your recipes.

    1. Hey Nyoka! It should be responsive to your phone
And fit the width on most if not all pages. I’m leaving this comment from my iPhone in fact. :) email me if it isn’t working for you!

  2. Love all the color, the “nicks picks” and the info on the side of the recipe with how long it takes etc. where are the snippets?

  3. Wonderful Nick!
    This looks amazing!
I will be the last person on earth to ever get a website makeover.
Love this design, do you think I would need a 2nd mortgage to afford these guys?

  4. Looks good. Nice and clean, easy to read too. Atta Boys to all! Chef B.Elliott, “Elliott’s On Central”

  5. I love the way it looks! Have always enjoyed your posts. Will use the revamped site and let you know how easy it looks like it will be.

  6. Thanks Nick, I’m 99% of the time on my phone, aka mobile device. Your site works great!

  7. Hey Nick I was wondering if the Random Recipe feature was thrown out. I loved being able to just jump through your recipes and find something good for that night? Otherwise the website looks great!

    1. Hey Byron! Yea… I decided to remove it temporarily but apparently it was more popular than I realized! :) I’ll think about adding it back in some way.

The truth is though that the functionality is still there… I just got rid of the link to it. If you type https://www.macheesmo.com/?random into your browser, it’ll pop up a random recipe… although not as easy as clicking. :)

  8. I’ve been following your blog for awhile now. I totally love it. Every one of your recipes has been a total hit. That’s probably the most important part, but your descriptions, photos and commentary knock it out of the park. I’ve seriously visited dozens of cooking blogs, but this one is my favorite.

  9. Love the new site, it looks great and is very functional! One question for the mobile version- is there a way to search for a recipe rather than browse the catalog? I usually do this a lot cause I look for something I have made before but don’t want to scroll through a ton of recipes, maybe I just can’t find it?

Also loving the new book, can’t wait to plan everything out for next week =) Always happy to see a bunch of recipes that are vegetarian or that I can make a vegetarian version for myself!

    1. Thanks! Yea… there’s no search on the mobile version at the moment. We wanted to keep it nice and clean. Might add that later but we figured if people were searching for recipes they could probably use the built in device search (you can just tack on Macheesmo) to find only macheesmo recipes.

That said, we might try to squeeze in a search somewhere.

Glad you like the book! Keep me posted on what you try. :)
