Vancouver, Eh?

Ahoy!

I’m in Canada for the better part of a week for a work conference. Even though it’s a ton of work, I always look forward to attending this conference every year. Since I work remotely now, it’s a great way to catch up with a lot of my old DC coworkers.

This year we are having the conference in Canada for the first time so I’m headed North! I’ve only been to Canada once for about two hours so I’m looking forward to seeing what Vancouver has to offer. I hear it’s a pretty amazing city.

Oh, and because I’m training for a half marathon right in the middle of all of this, I’ll be running around that big green peninsula in the photo above! Turns out running around that whole thing is about a ten mile loop from my hotel. Based on photos alone, I’m actually looking forward to my long weekend run for once!

Obviously, if you know of any good eats/drinks places in Vancouver, leave a comment.

The Links

Dickson’s Farmstand Tour – Really excellent butchers are few and far between these days (unfortunately) so it’s always good to see people who are doing it right. A great little photo tour and write up (@ Ruhlman)

Bacon Broccoli Potato Spring Rolls – Dan is always a master at smashing cuisines together and this cross between some sort of baked potato and a spring roll looks amazing. I could see sitting down to a plate of these guys for the football games this weekend! (@ Food in my Beard)

Spicy Beef Queso Dip – Cooked in a crock pot, it doesn’t get much better for a game day snack. You can make it in the morning and just keep it warm for hours. OR… pour it over nachos and eat it all immediately, which is what I would do. (@ Brown Eyed Baker)

Tuscan Grilled Steak Salad – It’s still solidly grilling season and if you’re looking for a quick flame-broiled meal, this is about as good as it gets. Healthy and delicious! (@ Dine and Dish)

Have a great weekend everyone! If you need me, I’ll be talking to a Mountie!

  1. I love, love, love Vancouver. I know it’s touristy but go to Granville Island if you get a chance. Love seeing all of the different artists and it’s lovely dining on the water. Not sure if you have time but it’s always nice to take the ferry over to Victoria and visit Butchart Gardens and have tea at the Fairmont.

  2. I’m from Vancouver – really recommend having dim sum at Kirin’s restaurant if you like Chinese food! There’s so many good places – also recommend Granville Island, Seasons in the Park, and Horizons Restaurant. And yes, definitely have tea at the Fairmont!

  3. Nick, I go to Vancouver yearly to visit friends and yes, go to Granville as the brewery there makes good beer. Plus I like Forage, in The Listel Hotel, on Robson, The Lift, and Joe Fortes Seafood and Chop House is also good. My daughter and I were there this April and we walked Stanley Park, I am sure that you will enjoy your run there.

  4. Wait, I totally thought the blog was your job! So, you’re juggling the blog, cookbook writing, TV appearances, AND another job?! Props, dude!

  5. You have to check out some Izakaya (Japanese tapas) here. I live in Gastown and LOVE Guu on Water street. It’s great to go with a ton of people and order loads of different dishes of the menu for everyone to share with some good Japanese beer! I recommend the grilled squid and okonomiyaki (savory seafood pancake) but the beef carpaccio is also to die for! Really check out the Izakaya scene here http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/14/180771/restaurant/Gastown/Guu-Otokomae-Vancouver
