Over the last few days, a few large wild fires have broken out in Colorado. They have already done some property damage and taken a few lives and aren’t anywhere close to being 100% contained. For some reason I thought these fires wouldn’t affect us much given that we live in downtown Denver, but oh was I wrong.
If the winds switch directions or blow our way, a light (but fragrant) smoke layers the entire city of Denver. I can’t imagine that it’s too good for the lungs and I’ve even seen a few people wearing filter masks.
The smoke doesn’t bother me too much but it definitely gets to Betsy. I think certain people are just more sensitive to particles in the air.
Of course, having to smell a bit of smoke is on the very mild end of consequences from these fires. I’m not fighting them and have zero risk of property being damaged from them. As my Dad would say, SUCK IT UP. Luckily, we have a very skilled team of brave firefighters in Colorado who are working around the clock to handle it.
Speaking of fires… they are roasting some really good green chiles in my local farmers market. Let’s put them to use!

Bacon Bloody Mary – There is a bit of work involved with this bloody mary including making bacon-infused vodka. I’ve made bacon bourbon before with great success so I imagine vodka works just as well if not better. (@ The Hungry Mouse)
Cauliflower Crust Pizza – My mom is gluten-free now and I’ve been on the hunt for a pizza crust recipe that she can eat that doesn’t completely suck. I’ve been trying to do flour alternatives but maybe cauliflower is the way to go! (@ Endless Simmer)
