Simply the BEST

A few months ago I started using Pinterest pretty actively and I must say that I finally get it. It’s super fun, but also very useful. I use it to find new recipe ideas and also to share stuff from Macheesmo. It’s quickly becoming my favorite social website.

But, there’s this completely annoying trend on Pinterest that drives me wild (and possibly just means I’m a crotchety old blogger).

Instead of labeling a dish what it is people just label the dish “THE BEST EVER.” A few things.

1) No it’s not. Pretty much any time you call something “The Best Ever” you’re wrong.

2) It completely makes the adjective  “Best” useless. I get maybe occasionally using it if you really think what you are doing is top notch. For example, I describe my mushroom veggie burgers as the best I’ve had. I don’t think they are the best EVER, but they are legitimately the best I’ve ever made. They also won me some cash… so I feel like that’s okay and genuine. But if you use it for every dish then it becomes meaningless. Sort of like how people have started overusing the word “epic.” (Really? Did it send you on a quest?)

3) Most importantly, it tells me nothing about your dish. Is it baked? Is it fried? Does it have herbs? How do you serve it? Oh… it’s just “BEST EVER”? Okay then.

I don’t know why this bothers me so much, but now I’ve aired my grievances and officially spent too much time on it!

The Links

A few links from around the web that are almost certainly not THE BEST but are VERY GOOD.

Sriracha Roasted Jalapeno Sloppy Joes – The spicy level is high in this dish which is very much to my liking. Plus, who doesn’t love a good, messy sloppy joe? (@ Real Food by Dad)

Spicy Asian Chicken Soup – Okay. More spicy things. This version is a bit more tame I think but I love the spicy twist on traditional chicken soup. (@ Love and Olive Oil)

How to Make a Pisco Sour – Probably in my top 10 for cocktails. The pisco sour is very under-rated. My only problem with them is that I have a hard time drinking just one. (@ Sippity Sup)

Fifteen Delicious Ways to Make Tofu – A great little round-up to get some tofu in your life. If cooked right, it’s one of my favorite add-ins. (@ The Kitchn)

Have a great weekend all! If you need me, I’ll be re-organizing my pet peeves.

  1. I’m glad you brought that up. It’s irritating to me when people label recipes the “best” whatever. I can understand if someone’s gone through several recipes and this one was declared the winner or perhaps is a family favorite. However, I feel like that’s hardly the case. It’s simply an overused and annoying way to make a recipe more appealing compared to every other recipe on Pinterest.

  2. My favorite are the ones labeled “this is the best recipe ever, I made a few changes with what I had on hand…” and then they list like six alterations. So what you’re really saying is that this ISN’T the best right?
