Looking Forward

Looking Forward

I decided to forego two things this year on the blog.

Thing one: A review of the best posts I wrote in 2012. There were some good ones, no doubt, but I’m sure everyone is pretty sick of those year-in-review list posts. If you want to see what I was up to, you can easily see all the 291 posts I posted in 2012 on the archives page!

Thing two: Resolutions. Rather than post a big list of things I would like to accomplish in 2013, I want to think about the things I’m looking forward to in the next year.

2013 is going to be a big year for me and I can’t wait to keep sharing it with you all on this little corner of the Interwebs! Here are a few specifics!

The Book

I’m looking forward to finishing the book I’ve been working on for about three years. I first made it available as a self-published project, but now I’m working on an expanded version that will be published by Lyons Press. My deadline is July 1st and I can’t wait to turn it in. Unfortunately, it won’t be available until 2014, but it’ll be off my desk for a bit at least!

Betsy and I will almost certainly be moving to Denver this year. It’s a move we’ve always wanted to make and while we don’t have a set date I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully we can live in a place for more than two years once we are there!

Last year I tore my ACL and had to have knee surgery. This meant a pretty horribly six-month recovery and, honestly, my knee still doesn’t feel anywhere close to 100%. That said, I can jog again and I definitely appreciate it more after the surgery. I’m looking forward to getting back on the trails and putting in some miles.

I’ve been doing a lot more freelance writing recently and I’m excited to keep working with some of the companies I’ve been working with in the last part of the year. I’m hoping to get some opportunities to write for a few national magazines, but I’m trying not to get too ahead of myself there.

Those are the big things I’m looking forward to in 2013.

I would love to hear what other people are looking forward to about the new year! Leave a comment if you have something!

Happy 2013!

  1. Looking forward to more hikes in the high country in this beautiful state we live in. Welcome to Denver. It is a great city.

  2. Hi Nick!-
Happy New Year. Congrats so much on the book. I will definitely buy it. I’ve been a big fan since I found your blog 3 years ago while I was searching for a chile rellenos . Your recipes have played a big role in some of our most successful entertaining gigs in the Quirky household. The Bison chili was among three featured versions of chili served at our Super Bowl Party last year. The year before, I made your carnitas from the guys night post (another hit.) And I used your macaroni and cheese recipe (the basic one from the box comparison post) as the base for a mac and cheese buffet I put together for a friend’s couples’ baby shower. (The concept will be repeated for our Super Bowl party this year.) Congrats also on the running. I had an injury last year and I totally get it.

  3. Nick… have you ever been in Denver on one of their 105 degree days? I’m up in Grand Lake and we generally run 20 to 25 degrees lower than Denver. I head West as soon as the shopping is complete! Hot angry drivers, bad drivers, terrible traffic is enough to smother an otherwise beautiful city.

    Just saying… (;-)

  4. Happy New Year Nick!! I sure understand about the bum knee. I’ve had four surgeries on the left knee and it’s still awful. I then put on a TON of weight which isn’t helping the knee any at all. I’ve reached the end of my rope. I need to move and it’s difficult. So, I’m looking forward to losing 100 lbs on Medifast. (I like this “looking forward to” thing!) I’m looking forward to walking (more than down the hall to the bedroom) and hiking in the desert once again. On another note, I do want to thank you for your recipe of Squash and Kale Stew. I had never cooked either kale or butternut squash. I loved it.

  5. I was proposed to on the 31st…so I’m looking forward to figuring out what we want to do with our wedding! I’d like something small and possibly tropical…but he’s more traditional than I am and wants more people around than I do :-)

I live in Denver, so I’m excited to hear about what area you choose if you end up saying and where you end up eating!
