If you are in the market for a fun snack for Halloween next week, look no further than these Baked Bloody Intestines! These are actually fun to make and turn out to be very delicious, even if they look kinda gross – it’s on purpose!

I originally saw the idea for these over a decade ago and unfortunately, the original site no longer exists. I’ve been making various versions of this for years though.

The original recipe recommended some interesting fillings such as guacamole. I went for something that I thought would be much better for a party environment: peanut butter and Nutella. It’s always a hit!

Puff Pastry vs. Pie Crust

I suppose you could use either puff pastry dough or pie crust dough for these baked intestine snacks, but personally I would go with puff pastry! It is flakey and delicious when filled with Peanut butter and Nutella.

How to stuff the puff pastry

Be sure to thaw your puff pastry. You can do this the night before in the fridge or just leave it out on the counter for 45 minutes and it should thaw.

Meanwhile, you will want these! There isn’t much to this recipe!

Ingredients for the baked intestines.

After like 40 minutes get out your baking dish and line it with parchment paper or lightly grease it. TIP: If you put a few drops of oil under the parchment paper, it will stick to the dish.

Now you can unfold your pastry puffs. If they aren’t thawed completely then they will crack so be sure to give them time to thaw.

Now that they are unfolded just cut down the self-made lines. Take your peanut butter and paint a line down the center. Try not to overfill it. Trust me. Once they are rolled up you will get the PB flavor. But you don’t want peanut butter exploding out of your intestines. That would look, well… gross.

Filling the puff pastry.

Then the real awesome part. Paint another line of Nutella right over the peanut butter. Again, don’t go crazy.

I was expecting this next step to be hard, but it isn’t really. Just roll over one end and leave just a small lip. Hard to explain but look at the photo.

Then, simply roll the “intestine” over so the lip covers up the seam. You now have a sealed intestine ready for baking. So grab one and put it in your baking dish seam side down. This is where you can really get creative. Create some twists and turns and smoosh it back and forth to look like, well, intestines. Try to smoosh the ends of each section together so it looks seamless. I didn’t do the best job, but I ended up with this:

My rolled up intestines in the dish.

Then for the blood. And this is where you will gain from my experience. The blood is a mix of red and blue and I like to stir it into melted butter so you can spread it around easily.

f you add to much blue you will make purple. You do not want purple blood. You want bloody blood. So if you are going to add some blue, add like one or two drops to your red. You just want to darken your red, not purplize it. I dotted my blood on with a fork to give it kind of a stitch affect. You could use a brush also.

Baking the Intestines

Baked Intestines ready for the oven.

Then you simply bake this for 35 minutes at 400 degrees or whatever it recommends on your pastry puff directions!

Do these actually look like intestines??? Well, I’m not sure. I think I will do better on my second time around because I will have plenty of puff pastry to fill the pan. But I can tell you that they are awesome. They are good warm and good cold. They are just good.

A fun, delicious, and gross looking Halloween appetizer that looks like baked intestines!

Ingredients

  • 2 large sheets puff pastry
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup nutella
  • Red and Blue food coloring

Instructions

  • Thaw puff pastry. Then preheat oven to 400 degrees F. and line a 9×13 baking dish with parchment paper. It’ll help to put a few drops of oil under the parchment paper so it sticks.
  • Unfold the puff pastry and cut each into thirds. Add a schmear of peanut butter down the center of each strip. Add a schmear of nutella over the peanut butter. Don’t overfill these or they will explode!
  • Roll the puff pastry into a long cylinder and transfer it to your prepared baking dish. As you add the puff pastry rolls, wind them around the dish to look like intestines.
  • Mix together red and blue food coloring (I would go with 20 drops red to 1-2 drops blue. It should be mostly red.) Then dot the puff pastry with the coloring around the edges and in the cracks.
  • Bake at 400 degrees F. for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let cool a bit before serving but you can serve it warm or cold.
