Around the Internet Kitchen: Cabin Fever

I’m the kind of person who likes to stay busy. I like to have multiple things to do each day because I have a fairly short attention span. Over the last week, cabin fever has definitely started to set in for me due to snowmageddon. Since last week, I’ve been pretty sedentary, just hanging out on the couch, reading, watching movies, and blogging.

It’s been okay and we got extremely lucky by not losing our power or heat or anything so I can’t really complain too much.

I did go into work one day and also went and played in the snow a few times, but basically my days have been spent watching these very long icicles form outside our window. It’s hard to tell from this photo, but I’d guess they are about 4 feet long.

Shockingly, the mail was still delivered once or twice throughout the week so I did get my new copy of Cook’s Illustrated!

And some links!

Black Forest Upside-Down Cakes – Well, this just looks very decadent. Perfect for the special lover’s day coming up this weekend. I’m a huge sour cherry fan so this looks right up my alley. (@ The Bitten Word)

Cornstarch (Hot and Sour Soup) – I was experimenting a lot with cornstarch over the last few weeks while I was doing the great baked fry experiment. Very interesting stuff. A little goes a long way. I had no idea that it was the main ingredient in my favorite Asian soup! (@ The Perfect Pantry)

V-Day Nanaimo Bars – Ok. I didn’t even know what a nanaimo bar was until I read this post. It’s actually possible that I’ve had one, but I’ve definitely never made one. Looks doable and very pretty. (@ My Baking Addiction)

Homemade Pancetta – A large amount of jealously overcame me when I read this post! I’ve been wanting to do this for months and just don’t have the space or environment to do it safely. Dan did it justice though. Looks damn near perfect. (@ TFIMB)

Have a good weekend everyone. I’ll be spending most of mine shoveling…

  1. Thanks for featuring the hot and sour soup from my blog. Now that I voted for the brownies, I'll have to keep tabs and see if you choose them! Up here in Rhode Island we've had minimal snow — for us, anyway — so we have a few icicles, but no cabin fever.

  2. Nooooooo…me and julie wanted a bread pudding recipe. We thought about making it last night but didnt have a good recipe and also thought it might be labor intensive. Not sure since we never tried, but our vote still for bread pudding so keep it in mind when thinking of stuff to make.
