The Internet Kitchen: Hoax!

by Nick

I’m sure you’ve all heard this by now unless you just emerged from a media blackout but THE weirdest story I’ve ever heard in my life (no joke) came out on Wednesday and I just can’t get over it.

Manti Te’0, not only one of the best football players in college football, but also apparently one of the nicest people in America, had some serious tragedy happen many months ago. Not only did he lose his grandmother, but he also lost his girlfriend (of many years) the same day.

The media took this amazing tale of overcoming adversity and ran with it. You could barely watch a Notre Dame football game without hearing about how strong he was to overcome such tragedy.

Well, it turns out that his girlfriend never died. Moreover, she never existed. Deadspin first broke this story on Wednesday and if you have 20 minutes, I highly recommend this long report. It’s stunning.

Even further, Manti is now saying that he thought she was real and that it was a huge conspiracy against him. They only had an online relationship so he had no idea that it was a huge practical joke being played on him for many years.

I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this story, but basically I think either A) he is lying or B) he is really lying.

Anyway, back to food!

The Poll

The Links

Honey Butter Popcorn - After my homemade trial yesterday, I’ve been on the lookout for new popcorn recipes. This one jumped out at me! I love the coconut oil addition. (@ Food Loves Writing)

Blood Orange Bars – The color of these bars is just outstanding. I can’t stop looking at them! (@ White on Rice Couple)

The Making of a Cookbook – This is a fun little post that shows just some of the work that goes into cookbook creation. Lindsay and Taylor are amazing and their new book, Breakfast for Dinner, looks great. (@ Love and Olive Oil)

Doppleganger - I’m a big This American Life fan and listen to almost every episode. Not only is this particular episode hilarious because Fred Armisen does a perfect impression of Ira Glass, but also the first story, Dead Ringer, is food related and shocking. (@ This American Life)
