The Internet Kitchen: It’s Insane

by Nick

I turn the big 30 in February and last year I made a pledge to get into the best shape I’ve been in since college before that big day.

Then I tore my ACL and my workout plan switched from five mile trail runs to painful knee bends. Luckily, I made it through the six month recovery without any real weight gain although my cardio is in pretty bad shape.

When I was telling this tale to a good friend of mine, he told me I should try out the Insanity 60 day challenge. My friend is in really good shape so I take his advice when it comes to workouts.

So, I decided to give it a shot. So far I made it through the first week and have only had a few moments where I broke down in near tears on my living room floor. I can’t do every exercise 100% because of my knee (and I wear a brace and am very careful). To be honest though, I don’t think I’d be able to do it all even with a completely solid knee. It’s hard stuff.

I love the workouts so far. They are about forty minutes of intense interval training. I’m not sure I’ve ever sweat so much in my life!

If people have any interest, I’ll share my thoughts when I hopefully finish the program also.

  1. I did the Insanity program. Finished in late August. Wanted to start up again in late September, but I did something to my hip. Not sure if it was the program or a muscle pull or what. Until that works itself out, I’m on the sidelines. If you want the benefit of my hindsight about the program, though, my advice is to listen to your body *carefully*. If you are doing some exercise and something starts to feel off, stop. Modify. You will still get the same benefit even though you do less than Shaun T. (That man is a beast!) Oh, and prepare to have calves of titanium. I couldn’t believe how much muscle I gained on my calves. My least favorite workout was plyo. Those high knees jumps were killer for me, and I was never really able to do the squat jacks for the full time, even at the end. Of course, I’m turning 50 this year. It was a challenge and after 60 days I was pretty tired of it. Glad I did it. I just wanted to see if I could.

    1. Awesome advice. Thanks! I’m definitely not going full speed on most of the exercises and nowhere near Shaun’s pace. I go my own pace and I’m cool with that. It still hurts (in a good way). ;)
