Internet Kitchen: Facebook Fixes

by Nick

If you happen to not follow financial news, or if you live under a rock, you maybe didn’t notice that Facebook is now a public company. That means you can own a piece of them!

It also means that they have become more focused on how to increase revenues. One place where it seems like they are really trying to raise revenues is on pages owned by websites or companies, like Macheesmo.

How the page used to work is if you “liked” it, it would push out any of my posts to your news feed.

This no longer works reliably because Facebook wants me to pay to send you posts. You see… they made this tiny little button that shows up when I try to update the page:

If I click the promote button, I can enter a budget and they will then make sure that all of my “likers” see the post in their news feed, assuming I pay enough.

This isn’t really realistic for me because, guess what, I’m poor.

For those interested in statistics, even though my Facebook “likes” have increased by about 20% in the last few months, my views for each post have decreased by about half.

So Facebook is actively filtering out posts that aren’t promoted to encourage people to pay for visibility.

The Fix

I really have no problem with this for two reasons:

1) They are a private company and can do whatever they want. I realize they need to make money and if this is a way they think they can do it then more power to them.

2) They built in a workaround for pages that you really like.

If you are on a page, say Macheesmo, you can click on the settings button and choose to “Add to Interest Lists” or “Add to My Page’s Favorites”. Either option will make it more likely that you will get new posts in your news feed.

Of course, I would love it if you did this for Macheesmo, but more importantly, if you have any pages that you really like but have noticed that you aren’t seeing their posts anymore, this is probably why.

Find the page and add them to your interests and you should get their updates more regularly.

The Poll

The Links

Bon Appetit Cover to Cover – This is an incredible project. Basically, this blog is working with its readers and other bloggers to cook everything in major magazines. This is their Bon Appetit version and is simply awesome. (@ The Bitten Word)

Voodoo Cookies – These are a bit of work, but man do they look cool. I doubt that I could replicate them and end up with anything close, but maybe you’ll  have better luck! (@ Etsy Blog)

No Fail Cakewalk Cake – This recipe looks really good and pretty straightforward and I love all the fun Halloween colors. (@ Ezra Pound Cake)

The Best Fall Cider – Is this the best fall cider? For real? I don’t know. But it does have a lot of booze in it so if you make it and drink it, you won’t care if there’s a better one out there. (@ Endless Simmer)
