Guess The Food: Three Low-Ingredient Foods

Normally, for these Guess the Food posts, I like to do one food item that has a ton of ingredients.

For this version though, I thought I’d switch it around and do three foods that have surprisingly few ingredients.

If you check the ingredient labels as you walk through the stores, you’ll frequently see “foods” with ten or twenty ingredients. When I took a look at the ingredients panels in these three foods though, I was pleasantly surprised to find a short list.

I’ve split up the three foods into categories.

Can you identify these three foods based on how few ingredients are in them?

Category One: Crackers

The cracker aisle at the store gives me heart palpitations. There are hundreds of varieties and all of them claim to be healthy in some way or another.

Most of them are jam-packed full of stuff though.

This brand is the one exception to that rule. It has three ingredients and I don’t think I need to explain any of them: Wheat, oil, salt.

That’s all there is to it!

These are some of my favorite crackers to snack on just because I know exactly what I’m eating. I also find that six of them (a serving) sometimes with some cheese or honey is the perfect afternoon snack.

Can you guess what these minimalist crackers might be?

 Category Two: Breakfast Foods

If there’s an aisle at the store that’s worse than the cracker aisle, it’s the cereal aisle.

I hate the cereal aisle. I feel like boxes are just shouting at me and I have absolutely no idea what is what.

I honestly spent about twenty minutes in the aisle trying to find a cereal that was a surprise. Most are packed with sugar and unwanted junk.

The box at the right was pretty unassuming. It was on the bottom shelf and has just eight ingredients. This is seriously half of what most breakfast cereals look like.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s also a pretty healthy cereal. It has very little fat, low sugar, and a good amount of fiber.

Most of the ingredients are pretty straightforward. There are a few different kinds of flour, all of which are pretty high quality. There is some salt, vitamins, baking soda, and molasses.

The only word I had to look up was Tocopherols. It turns out it is just a variety of Vitamin E that occurs naturally in a ton of food. Doesn’t seem to be a big deal to me and there was no negative info that I could find on it.

As a complete bonus, I also really enjoy the taste and texture of the cereal. It’s not stupidly sweet and holds its crunch pretty nicely.

Category Three: Flavored Water

Water is seriously big business these days. After Vitamin water hit the market, businesses realized quickly that they can make a pretty penny by selling what is essentially sugar water as a health drink.

Most of these products aren’t worth the plastic they are stored in.

When I’m looking for flavored water (which is rare), this is the bottle I look for.

It has two ingredients: Water and mint and a few different varieties that have higher or lower amounts of mint.

The mint makes it completely refreshing and even though there is no sugar in it, I swear it tastes slightly sweet.

There’s almost nothing better on a scorching day then a cold bottle of this water.

This should go without saying, but I wasn’t compensated in any way for this post. They are just my observations after spending a fair amount of time wondering the grocery aisles.

The question, of course, is if you can guess what these three products are?!

  1. The first one is Triscuits and the last one is Hint! No clue about the cereal, though…can’t even remember the last time I was IN the cereal aisle. :)

  2. I say Triscuits, Corn Flakes, and as far as the flavored water I would have no idea bc I dont shop there much, but interested to find out what it is!

  3. Triscuits is the first one. The others, I have no idea. I thought maybe corn flakes but the box in my cupboard has a different ingredient list.

  4. Triscuts, Puffins Cereal, and infused water? That last one is tough. First I thought maybe mouthwash, but it would need to have some alcohol…

  5. First is definitely Triscuits. Sorry, no idea on the other two–we don’t generally have packaged cereal in our house and other than zipping through to grab oatmeal it’s not an isle I go into. Same for the water; it’s either plain water or occasionally watered down gatorade if I’m doing a run longer than 6 or 7 miles.

  6. I knew the first one right off the bat because it’s the only cracker I’ll let my kids eat! I spread the word to everyone who will listen about the 3 ingredients of triscuts.

    Thanks for a fun “Guess the Foods” These items are ones I leave off the grocery list. I am glad to know there are a couple of options that are okay to eat. Thanks for raising my awareness level.

  8. I used to love triscuits. Have you ever had the cracked black pepper kind? I don’t know what’s in them and I’m sure they’re not as “naked” as the originals but holy crap they’re good.
