Top Ten Macheesmo Photos

I would say that I spend about as much time on photos for each Macheesmo post as I do on actually writing the post itself. If this website has taught me anything to date it is that photography is hard.

That said, I have almost 800 photos on Macheesmo now and there are literally thousands of photos on my computer that will never see the light of day due to their suckiness. So I thought it would be fun to do a Top Ten post showing my personal favorites from the last six months.

Whoa. I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for six months.

All of the photos link to the original posts.

#10 – I learn to use a camera

The start of something beautiful.

The start of something beautiful.

This was the first set of photos I took after acquiring a cheap photography light and also getting some helpful tips from a friend. There are about two months of photos on Macheesmo before this post that aren’t terrible, but I considered this post a turning point.

#9 – Colors and white boards

The photo does not do the salad justice.

The photo does not do the salad justice.

I really love the photos in this post because of the awesome colors. This photo above was especially colorful I thought. This was also the post where I realized how awful it looked to have a reflecting white board in the shot. In the post there is one in almost every shot. Sigh.

#8 – I don’t learn my lesson

Macheesmo, M.D.

Macheesmo, M.D.

Homemade chicken soup is one of my favorite things to make in the winter. This photo reminds me of feeling better after a few days of sickness. I also forgot everything I learned about keeping white boards out of the shot.

#7 – Groups of butter

Like Butta.

Like Butta.

I took this photo recently, and I really liked the look of the wrapped up butters. I think this may be because I can just imagine all of the lovely meals I can make with each little bundle.

#6 – The grilled cheese

Winner!

Winner!

This was the post where I think I succeeded at making and photographing the grilled cheese. It was also the post that gave me my first 1,000 hit day on Macheesmo so it holds a special place in my heart.

#5 – Are those even real?

Fake nachos. Except not.

Fake nachos. Except not.

I swear these are the real nachos I made, but when I look at them I think they look almost too perfect. They look almost staged! And I guess they sort of are because I knew I was going to take a photo of them. Trust me though. They don’t just look good. They are good.

#4 – Artsy Figgy

Figgin Figs.

Friggin' Figs.

The photo on the left I found especially artsy and pretty. Something about how the figs are sliced was cool. The sandwiches I made with them were pretty darn good also.

#3 – A pork roast

So good.

So good.

I was nervous when I was cooking this as I haven’t cooked a lot of full roasted, but it came out really well and photographed well also. It made for a great dinner party.

#2 – Mashed Potato Pizza

Best. Thing. Ever.

Best. Thing. Ever.

This one post has accounted for about 1/4 of my Macheesmo traffic. It also happens to be delicious and this is my favorite photo from that post.

#1 Happiness

Absolutely Happy.

Absolutely Happy.

This is one of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken. It’s a photo of my nephew who I rarely see and he is just so happy in it. It makes me smile every time I look at it.

Now that I’ve shown some of my favorite photos I would love to see some of yours. If you have a favorite photo either that you’ve taken or just in general, post it in a comment!

Trust me I'm still learning also ;)

This is one of the better write-ups I've seen on food photography. Read it and digest it and then start doing little things. Each step will improve your photography a lot.

I think lighting is more important than camera. If you can't use natural light all the time, it might be worth investing in a a cheap tabletop light. This is the one I use and I'm very happy with it. Sometimes I drape a white shirt over it to diffuse the light a bit as it can be a bit harsh.

Ok, so my favorites are "happiness" and the "grilled cheese"

How the heck did you pull off getting 1000 hits (ooooh, as I typed 'hits' I realized that didnt' mean comments) – sheesh! I truly became jealous of you (as I only get about 3 comments per post).

I love the pictures, and I, too, have thought about getting a photography light. Seeing your pictures is worth the investment.

I think my favorite picture I took is this one of ripe figs off my tree. I have no idea what I'm doing with my camera, but sometimes I get lucky.

@lisha haha. Yea. Not 1000 comments. That would be major.
