This book really is the ultimate cookbook, I'm not using the revised edition and my copy is in tatters, but it's the first place I look for every project. Great basic roast chicken and pork roast recipes. Bittman is pretty much fun to watch on Wednesday's NYTimes.com site. Also check out his blog.

I've been wondering about this book. It sounds like a more laid back version of the Cooks Illustrated tome, The New Best Recipe. That's a book I wouldn't want to live without. Their website is also a pretty amazing resource.

I'm new to the site and really enjoying it. Can't wait to have the hot dog dinner.

Oh dear. The croissant experiment of 2009. For those who don't follow me on Twitter, a few weeks ago I set out to try a few different croissant recipes and try to master the pastry.

HA! HA! HA! I've never failed at one cooking thing so much ever. I'm going to keep working at it and if I ever get something even halfway edible I'll write a post.

They are very tricky suckers to make.

I ended up going to Whole Foods and buying some for the shower. My ego has yet to recover.

Speaking of croissants, I was just wondering how your project with them was going (went?). Did I miss it? Is the shower (it was for a shower, right?) over? What happened?
