I've gotta add a rolling pin to the list. And not one of those wussy pins with handles and ball bearings; I'm talking about the French rolling pins that look they're from Home Depot. Good for rolling things out, any whacking task, and home defense.

I spent a few years insisting that a Nalgene was just as good...and I was so, so wrong.

@Shannalee: Silpat's are sooo cool.

If you don't know what a silpat is, check it out at silpat.com.

@Erin: I don't have one yet, but it is on my short list.

I am head over heels for my Silpat. I use it every time I bake cookies, which, let's be honest, is an awful lot.

Nice list! My one additional must have in addition to the box grater is a microplane grater. That is my absolute favorite kitchen utensil :)

I'd have to add a good cast iron skillet. But then that probably goes under essential cookware instead of tools. The ranch chips look yummy and easy. And perfect for my 12 yr old daughter to make.

I have a hand held electric mixer - essential for my baking since I have to whip up a lot of egg whites and whipped cream...

Great post and I totally agree with you. There are some dust-gatheringly awful 'gadgets' out there. Spend the money on a decent bit of German steel instead and you eliminate the need for 90% of make-your-life-easier gadgets.

@Jean: Awesome list. Another reader also corrected me about the cutting boards! I updated the post and linked to a NY Times article that explains why you are right. Thanks for the correction!

@Lauren: Garlic press can definitely be useful if you like to keep up a solid social life.

Some people like walking around with finger tips that smell like garlic for days at a time, but it drives me crazy. I find a garlic press to be a pretty essential tool in the kitchen because it allows you to get a minced or chopped garlic effect without getting too much garlic smell on your fingers and hands. :-)

Ooh, do I agree with this one! So much useless junk in kitchen stores. I couldn't cook without good knives, wooden spoons, good quality plastic spatulas in several sizes (the kind you get mayonnaise out of a jar with), tongs!, wooden cutting boards (they actually kill germs, I'm told and I've had mine forever)my Calphalon pots, whisks, inexpensive Teflon skillets in two sizes, and believe it or not a little pastry blender that also chops up hard boiled eggs nicely. And of course, most of the stuff you mentioned.
